THE CAPE HUNTING DOG PAGE
Created by Mugwi of TLKMuck

This web page is dedicated solely to cape hunting dogs, because there are so few pages for them out there on the web. :) Mugwi is a CHD that I play on TLKMuck, which can be found at http://www.thumper.net/tlkmuck/ And is a very good muck, even thought it, like most mucks has a few problems. Recently, at an RP Seminar, it came up that there are very few CHDs on the muck.. and THEN it came up that no one knew WHAT a chd is. So, I said, after searching for almost 15 minutes for a page giving CHD stats that I needed to put up a CHD web page on the net!!! GO CAPE HUNTING DOGS!!! So here it is. And as soon as Monolith is working again, our new address will be instated. And I will post this place on the muck boards! BTW, you need Win98 to see these fonts!
GENUS SPECIES NAME: Lycaon pictus (Means Painted Wolf)
COMMON NAME: African Wild Dog
Cape Hunting Dog
Painted Wild Dog
Painted Hunting Dog
Description: Wild dogs have a canine body shape similar to a wolf's,
though they have larger, batlike ears and white-tipped tails. Wild dogs, though, have
unforgettable coloring: splotches of dark brown, black, yellow, and white, with no two
dogs marked the same. In fact, they look less like dogs or wolves than like hyenas, for
which they are sometimes mistaken.Length of body is 30 to 40 inches with a tail 12 to 16
inches long. Weight ranges from 44 to 60 pounds. Spotted coloration of their coat is
sufficiently unique that no two animals have the same pattern. Vision is strong and,
unlike other canids, they hunt only by sight and not by
scent. Body is thin and strongly muscled with long, thin legs. Have great endurance while
running and can reach speeds of up to 37 mph during the final part of the hunt.
Social Habits: Have strong family bonds headed by alpha male and alpha female. Live in stable groups of related males with related females leaving to join a different pack at 14 to 30 months old. Pups are given priority at feeding; adults wait until youngsters have finished. Engage in cooperative hunting following the direction signals of the alpha male. Hunting occurs around dawn and dusk.
Reproduction: Gestation is approximately 70 days with a litter of 6 to 10. Pups can begin eating regurgitated solid food at about 3 weeks. During tthe first 2 months the pups are protected by 1 to 2 adults when the pack is hunting. Pups are weaned in 10 to 12 weeks and reach sexual maturity between 12 to 18 months.
Diet in the wild: Gazelle, antelope, zebra, wart-hog. Drink little water; receive adequate amounts from blood of prey.
